We have been busy in our classroom this week. The students are working hard writing sentences in FUNdations and circling trick words. The first graders love using the white boards. We also started subtraction this week, and the students are working hard to understand all the concepts.
Tomorrow is our trip to Patterson's Apple Farm. We can't wait. Stay tuned...pictures will be up soon! We completed centers this week. Centers are different islands the students travel to, to complete varies activities. This week one center was called Go Bananas- which seemed to be the favorite. This game reviewed kindergarten and first grade sight words. Another center reviewed short a vowel sound words. To practice fluency, another center included sight word phrases to practice reading. The last center involved word sorts. Word sorts help the students improve their reading and spelling by sorting pictures and words into categories by word endings or vowel sounds. On Friday the students and I read a story titled Howard B. Wigglebottom Listens to His Heart. We discuss the story and what lesson it teaches us. We then discussed "making a movie" in our heads as a story is being read, which helps us remember the story events. We split into groups and "made a movie" of certain pages on large white paper. The students worked well together to make their pages come alive. We had some great ideas! On a page when Howard is shy and scared, the group colored his face red to show his feelings. On a page when Howard is getting laughed at, the group wrote HAHAHA on the page. Our "making a movie" activity was a lot of fun. We finished by making pages for a class book titled Mrs. Zale's class listens to their Hearts! Behavior in our class is great! Students are earning reward coupons! A few friends picked a show and tell coupon and cashed them in today! Great job first graders! Keep up the GREAT work!! We finished last week by using our listening ears and eyes during a story. After I was done reading a story to the students, we broke into groups and sequenced the events in the story. The students learned an important lesson...it is important to listen carefully!
