Last week, we split into groups and read stories about good character traits to have. Each group read a story and then drew a picture about the skill they learned. It was a great opportunity for the students to not only learn good traits but also demonstrate good traits by working together. We started off the week with our character counts pledge and a song to go with it. Our class was right up front to lead the school! I was so proud of the awesome behavior I saw from the students. Great job Mrs. Zale's first graders!
The students and I played a new game this week to practice our trick words and high frequency words. The students are working hard to identify these words quickly. Knowing these words will help our first graders read with fluency! Ask your first grader what fluency means.
Have a great weekend! As we talk about short vowel sound words, we are noticing some have the same ending sounds. We spend time on Friday feeding our monsters -ick, -it and -ill words. Students had to think of words that ended in these sounds. After all the words were written, students finally got to make a monster. The monsters look great in our classroom- just in time for Halloween!
As we continue to work on short vowel words and get ready for Halloween we made owls that need vowels. Underneath each feather is a short vowel sound word matching the feather on the vowel. The students got to practice reading and sorting short vowel sound words and afterwards the first graders got to make their owls represent themselves! WOW! What a great job they did!!
Last week, we spent time modeling addition and subtraction problems. Modeling helps us see the problems as real objects instead of just numbers. The first graders had fun while learning and working with partners. If students are having trouble completing their math homework, make sure they are modeling the problem. It will surely help!
As Student of the Week, C.J. brought in his favorite pet...a duck! The students learned a lot about ducks and even got to pet the duck. How awesome! Be sure to ask your first graders about some facts about ducks! |
